Their efforts led to the development of a comprehensive code of conduct that was expected to regulate every aspect of the believer’s life. Soon after his death, the Prophet’s successors set about the overwhelming task of defining and interpreting Muhammad’s message for future generations. The revelations that Muhammad received in Mecca and Medina, which were recorded in the Quran, became the foundation for a radically more egalitarian community, the likes of which had never been seen before. Aslan begins with a vivid account of the social and religious milieu in which the Prophet Muhammad lilved. In No god but God, challenging the “clash of civilizations” mentality that has distorted our view of Islam, Aslan explains this critical faith in all its complexity, beauty, and compassion.Ĭontrary to popular perception in the West, Islam is a religion firmly rooted in the prophetic traditions of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. What is the essence of this ancient faith? Is it a religion of peace or war? How does Allah differ from the God of Jews and Christians? Can an Islamic state be founded on democratic values such as pluralism and human rights? A writer and scholar of comparative religions, Reza Aslan has earned international acclaim for the passion and clarity he has brought to these questions. Though it is the fastest growing religion in the world, Islam remains shrouded by ignorance and fear.

There's something so liberating about a book that makes you want to run up to the nearest person and describe the amazing thoughts that have just been put in your head. I love books that are bizarre and exciting and ridiculous. I enjoy living close to things so I can not go to them, and I spend my time pining for my old age when I can shout at kids to get off my lawn. I am a writer, historian, and ornamental hermit. The first question I'd ask is for directions to the nearest speakeasy. If I could travel back in time to any point in history, it would be the 1920s. I love the authors so much who've done that for me, and the most I can hope for is to do that for someone else. Everywhere I looked I saw effigies of an unrequited love and a past filled with regret.ĭestroy a nation, but its mountains and rivers remain. Shadows made me stir, hoping they were his. The wind in the branches had me turning left and right, chasing a sound that resembled his laughter. My imagination played tricks on me in this place of memories. I found the lake where we used to swim, and in a field of chrysanthemums, the unfinished shrine of the Inari god, covered in moss and blackened by time. I found the spot where Kogitsune and I often sat for lunch. Yet, some things remained as I remembered. Saplings and younger trees as thick as my leg had replaced them. They must have burned a decade ago in that terrible wildfire. The old secular cedars were nowhere to be seen. It was in the mist, rising from the ground as if to bar the way. It was in the chill seeping into my bones like a wet blanket that grew heavier with every step I took. I sensed it in my guts, as the birds ceased to sing at my approach and the sun vanished behind gray clouds. Kogitsune is book #1 in the Takamagahara Monogatari series, followed by Shinigami – today’s giveaway. This is not only a very time consuming post to have written, it’s very generous and special. Today we have a fantastic post from Xia Xia Lake, who has graciously written the missing sex scene from the delightful Kogitsune especially for our 8th blog anniversary. Best known for his work in silent film, his most famous role was the Little Tramp, a universally recognisable and iconic character who appeared in films such as The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925) and City Lights (1931). Darevdevil Vs Wolverine in bright bold colors with Elektra's silhouette in the background. Not only that, issue 24 is one of my favorite covers of all time. It reads like a Long Halloween type story but, in my opinion anyway, is told better and is much darker. This story has everything, an evil/brainwashed Wolverine, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Elektra, The X-men, Wolverine fighting a great white shark and a crap-ton of death. The events of this book lead directly into Wolverine's decision to join the New Avengers along with Spider-man and Luke Cage.
